In Christianity and American Culture Today : Essays in Honor of Richard D. Land

For years, I worked alongside Richard Land, when we were “products” of the conservative resurgence in the SBC Building in Nashville—he the head of the Christian Life Commission/Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission and I as a VP for PR at the Executive Committee. Then, when I went to MBTS, we were together on the SBC Great Commission Council. And there were many other connections, e.g., in the same Sunday School class at FBC Franklin, TN; working closely with the CLC when, as state exec in Indiana, I chaired the Resolutions Committee in 1989. So I was honored and pleased when Mel Winstead of Southern Evangelical Seminary (which Richard has served as president for a decade) asked me to contribute a piece to this Festschrift. My essay was drawn from notes for two talks I gave at MBTS as Scudder Lectures.

On Richard’s 75thbirthday, the occasion for the book, a number of us contributors were able to join him and Rebekah in a Zoom call, where Mel told him what was in the works and we enjoyed reminiscing with him on our teamship with him through the years. Among those on the call were Daniel Heimbach, Paige Patterson, Ronnie Rogers, and Gerald Harris. Other contributors include Barrett Duke, Jimmy Draper, Tony Perkins, and Chuck Kelley.
