THE COMFORT PRINT STORY
Seven Bible Typeface Families Created by 2K/DENMARK for HarperCollins Christian Publishing
In 2019, John Kramp (whom I'd known and worked with in various contexts for over three decades) invited me to a meeting at the Thomas Nelson offices in Nashville. He was now Senior Vice President and Group Publisher for Bibles for HarperCollins Christian Publishing. Under his leadership, HC elected to commission a new typeface for each of the seven Bibles they published—the KJV, NKJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV, NET, and the HCCP Catholic. There I met Klaus Krogh, the head of the typeface "foundry" 2K/DENMARK, and I was enlisted to write text to accompany the various new fonts. For each, I was to supply a brief account of the historical context, contemporary inspiration, and aesthetic components involved in the designs, which were crafted for both beauty and readability (hence "Comfort Print"). Along with Johannes Haahr of 2K/DENMARK, I worked on the explanations, providing by my count somewhere around 8,000 words for this 150-page, richly-illustrated, four-color, "coffee-table" book. Click on the link, and you'll find "unboxing" and "presentation" videos, the former featuring a turn through the book, the latter with Klaus explaining their vision and craft.
