Optic Cleansing
June 30, 2015
In August of 2017, Charlottesville, Virginia, was the site of clash between those wanting the Robert E. Lee statue removed (which it was this summer, along with the one in Richmond). Following the commentary, I thought it would be good to pitch in a bit, especially when I saw that some Evangelicals were going for the nuclear option, charging that anyone dragging his feet on the take down were literally heretics, deniers of the imago Dei. My remarks range beyond statues to the Confederate flag and but also to the statue of the Confederate soldier in the town square of Franklin, Tennessee, where I’ve lived on two occasions and now attend church.
