There are 40 state Baptist conventions associated with the Southern Baptist Convention, with Texas and Virginia having two (one more conservative, one less so). The reason there are 40 instead of 50 is that some of these conventions encompass several states, e.g., New England with six, Dakota with two, and Northwest with two. This April, 2015 issue of the South Carolina paper, The Courier, ran a Baptist Press piece I wrote for Easter in 2009.
