FIRST-PERSON: Beware the Moonshine
April 24, 2023
Along with 47 others, I'm on the steering council of the Conservative Baptist Network. The council includes fellow/former SBC seminary presidents (Phil Roberts and Chuck Kelley), another OBU grad (Mike Huckabee), and Family Research Council president (Tony Perkins). It was formed in response to the emergence of "wokeness" in leadership sectors of the SBC. This spring, the CBN asked me to do a piece on the ways that SBC messengers can be bamboozled in their deliberations, and here's what I wrote. But first, a look at the CBN rationale from the website:
Truth is being eroded and Scripture undermined in ways our current generation has not seen before. Secular society is questioning things once settled as certain — things such as the simple meaning of womanhood — and, sadly, many evangelical institutions and churches are trailing not far behind, calling into question whether Scripture is true, sufficient, and authoritative.
The Conservative Baptist Network exists because a group of Southern Baptists recognized the destructive direction in which their convention of churches had begun to veer — away from God’s Word and toward culturally accepted ideas — and decided to take a stand for the Truth. This grassroots effort has grown significantly since its founding in 2020, with individuals and churches from all across the nation linking arms to stand together for the biblical gospel and the “faith, once for all delivered to the saints" (Jude 1:3). Join us as we work prayerfully and earnestly to #ChangetheDirection of a 16-million-person ship known as the Southern Baptist Convention away from seeking approval of the world and back toward a joyful commitment to God’s Holy Word.
