A Southern Baptist Among the Roman Catholics
August 9, 2025
In the early 2000s, Kairos Journal publishers, Emmanuel and Camille Kampouris, introduced me to American Spectator founding editor, Bob Tyrrell, and, since then, the online version of the magazine has run twenty-something of my pieces, touching on everything from Never-Trumpism to sidewalk courtesy in Chicago to the Covenant School shooting in Nashville to the Dodgers' trans night to the Progressive Insurance "Parentamorphosis" ad to the Satan statue in the Iowa state house. A couple of years ago, Grove City prof, Paul Kengor, became editor, with Tyrrell becoming editor-in-chief. Kengor, who has a Presbyterian background, became a Catholic years ago, and I've noticed an uptick in pieces about Catholicism, e.g., his reflections on the death of Pope Francis. Fascinating reading, and it prompted me to pitch in an article on Roman Catholicism from one man's SBC perspective. (BTW, Mark DeVine of Beeson Divinity School is the other SBC voice to be heard on TAS, and we've enjoyed attending a couple of the publication’s annual banquets in DC. I wrote an Encounters piece on one of those events, with a photo of us standing beside the governor or Arizona.)
